Welcome to Henna Inspired
Artwork and Design by Karyn Alzayer
Artist Statement
Since I first began working with it, henna has always drawn me in. Far more than just the artwork, henna is about connections. When henna is applied, the artist physically holds and touches the recipient, creating a warm, sacred, and relaxing space. We chat, forgetting about the world, immersing ourselves in the unfolding design, the pleasant aroma of the henna, and each other’s company. I let the subconscious lead the linework, often not planning what design to do until I connect with the recipient, hold their hand and begin laying down the paste. Because of the unique shape and topography of each person’s hand, even the same design can manifest differently among different individuals.
When I focus on applying designs to fabric or canvas, that connection and unique spirit is still present. The vibrant colors of the fabric, rhythm of hand embroidery, and hum of the sewing machine all come together to create a tactile piece inviting the viewer to come closer to see and touch all the details. When working with paints, I draw freehand, using a traditional henna applicator called a henna cone to apply acrylic paint, incorporating elements from traditional henna style designs of India, the Middle East, and Northern Africa, merged with modern abstract design elements.
My work is dedicated not only to forming connections, but also drawing attention to the connections we have with one another: our duty as citizens, as fellow humans sharing this same planet. Simple lines create movement, provoke thought, question norms, accentuate imagination, invite warmth. A line is a path. Everything comes from the lines that connect us.
